Realized on June 29, 2002, Transient Rainbow, a minute-long show of color and light, is one of Cai’s most important explosion events. The work was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) to mark its temporary move from Manhattan to the borough of Queens in 2002. Notably, the project was the first pyrotechnic event allowed in New York after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center almost a year prior on September 11, 2001.

With sensitivity to the magnitude of this occasion, Cai chose a rainbow motif to symbolize renewal and promise. In order to create the form of a rainbow, shells containing computer chips were specifically designed by Fireworks by Grucci to control the precise height and timing of each detonation. The shells were fired off the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, and the form arched over the East River from Manhattan to Queens.

This was the debut of the fireworks smoke shells fitted with computer chips.

The rainbow appeared twice, first sweeping across the sky in a progressive cadence, immediately followed by a simultaneous flash illuminating the night sky with a full rainbow. The vibrant arc of colors was reflected on the surface of the river, creating the illusion of a continuous ring of light. The spectacular result unified viewers in a common celebration.
